Hello parents!

Today we participated in Orange Shirt Day. We attended an assembly, where we spoke about making every child feel like they matter.

In the past few weeks, we have been learning more and more about Reader Rock Garden and who William Roland Reader is. We talked about how William helped people in his community using his garden and plants that he grew. We also looked at the people that we spoke about in Union Cemetery, and learned more about how they contributed to growing Calgary's community. We used pictures that were taken or found to help us answer some questions around building Calgary's community.

We have been working on our goal setting... we thought hard about setting a learning goal, work period goal, and a social or personal goal. We can't wait to share these with you at conferences!

See you at conferences!

Hi parents!

Today we looked closely at our classroom plants in order to create physical and growth characteristics. This will help us classify the plants. We then borrowed Ms. Bouchard's plants, and used our scientific observations in order to decide which community the pair of plants belonged to.

We discovered we have plants in the following plant communities: the cacti community, the water plant (aquatic) community, the flowering plant community, the fern community, the air plant community, and the moss community. Next Monday we will borrow Ms. Loewens plants and see if they fit into these communities according to their characteristics.

There is no school tomorrow. Enjoy your long weekend!

These last few days we've been working on our newt and toad jot notes and venn diagrams. Ask me what these two creatures have in common.

Mrs. Morden gave us exciting news today.... she is going to have a baby in the New Year!

Please note that Conference Manager is now open and available to book conferences thru My CBE Account.

Have a great day parents!

Tuesday, September 19th

Hello families,

Our classroom field trip to Reader Rock Garden was a success. There was lots of learning and connections to be made. Students enjoyed walking through the gardens, observing and identifying plants. Many of us were able to recognize some familiar types of plants that were growing in the garden that we are also growing in the classroom. We are learning that different plants are part of different communities. Students used their field journals to observe and sketch a plant in the Reader's garden, using all the botanist techniques that they have been practicing back in the classroom. We learned the history behind William Roland Reader, who worked as City of Calgary Parks as a superintendent from 1913 to 1943. William Roland Reader contributed to the growth of Calgary as he shared his passion for plants, making the cities outdoor spaces more beautiful. We also took a walk through Union Cemetery, as we were introduced to a number of important people who also contributed to the growth in Calgary in many different ways. We spoke about AE Cross, John Ware, Louise Riley, and Colonel James F. Macleod to name a few.

I am looking forward to bringing all our learning back in to the classroom and expanding upon all our new findings.

Have a wonderful evening,

Mrs. Morden

Welcome to the new school year!

We have settled in wonderfully into the 2017-2018 school year as grade 3 & 4 students!

Thank you for sending your child's communication folder to school this past week, this serves as an important communication tool to share important information.

Our Reader Rock Garden field trip on September 19th is approaching quickly. If you have not done so please sign and return forms. We are still looking for a few volunteers for this day- please send Mrs. Morden an email or note if you are interested.

In the past week, we have been looking closely at plants as a botanists as we learned how to use leaf shapes and margins to identify plants. In math, we have been using the Montessori materials to explore our understanding of double and triple digit addition. Students are enjoying observing our classroom pet "Lightning" the fire-bellied toad and were excited to see Ms. Romanko's fire-bellied newt "Flames" in the classroom today. It will be great to observe these two closely related creatures over the next little while. We are beginning to look at narrative texts, and began creating a "Heart Map" as a brainstorming tool. Students included ideas such as 3 important memories, people, things, and places. We will use these ideas down the road when it is time to create a narrative text, as the best ideas come straight from the heart!

I hope you have a great evening!
