Tuesday, May 1st

Dear families,

What has been happening in Room 5?

Well...

Today we began the David Suzuki One Nature challenge which involves spending 30 minutes each day for 30 days outdoors during work period.

On Thursday we will be doing a neighborhood walk during the morning to Shoppers Drug Mart to send our Great Canadian Mail Race letters in the mail. What is that you ask? It is chain mail, so we received a letter from a Grade 3 student in Beaumont, AB and our job was to write to a fellow student  Grade 3 student in Canada. Ask your child where in Canada they wrote their letter to!

Netball has started this week! We had our first lesson on Monday. Our next netball sessions are on Wednesday, Thursday, and next Monday the 7th. It is such a fun and interactive sport to play. Ask your child about it!

Important Dates to Remember:

May 2nd - Hats on for Mental Health
(On May 2, 2018, Albertans are invited to wear a hat to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health. Participating schools will relax their hat rules and encourage students and teachers to build understanding by wearing hats to school.)

Netball

Netball Blog

Lake Bonavista School is participating in Netball from April 30 until May 7th in our gymnasium. This sport involves foundational movement skills such as jumping, running, throwing, and catching. As described on the Netball Alberta website (www.netballalberta.com): “Netball is an exciting, fast and skillful game of fair contest: It is a game in which two teams of seven players each strive to keep or gain possession of the ball. Players have specified areas in which they can move.”
Parent Council has graciously provided the funding to bring this event into our school.

Consent forms have been sent home in your child’s communication folder. Please sign and return the forms so your child is able to participate in this fun LBS event!

Humboldt Broncos Jersey Day

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we are hearing about the terrible tragedy that occurred in the province of Saskatchewan to the Humboldt Broncos Junior Hockey Team we feel shock, sadness, empathy and so many other emotions.

At Lake Bonavista School, we would like to show our support for the people connected to this sad event. A group of British Columbia hockey parents are asking Canadians to wear a jersey on Thursday, April 12 to show support for those that have been impacted by this tragedy. (https://globalnews.ca/news/4130525/humboldt-broncos-crash-hockey-jersey-day/). If students do not have a jersey, they can wear something green.

Students will also be invited to write messages of support that will be collected into a book format and sent to the public school in Humboldt Saskatchewan.
Thank you for supporting our school community's efforts to support the Humboldt Broncos community.

Ukrainian Easter Eggs

Hello families,

Continuing with the concept of culture, students began learning about the upcoming Ukrainian Easter celebration. Students shared what they knew about the celebration and learned some of the ways that Ukrainians traditionally choose to celebrate their Easter through food, symbols and pysanky making.

On Wednesday, April 11th students will have the opportunity to create their own pysanky eggs using traditional tools (beeswax, kiska, and a tea light candle flame). In order to prepare for this learning activity students have been asked to create a nest for three raw white eggs to bring to school either on Tuesday or Wednesday. A few ways to create nests were shown and discussed on Friday. Creating a nest at home will help ensure the eggs arrive safely, with the hope of the psyanky eggs being returned home safely after they are inscribed on.

Please make sure your child is also wearing clothing to school on Wednesday that is okay to get the colored dye on.

Room 5 is looking for volunteers to help us out!

When: Wednesday, April 11th

Time: Approximately 12:30-2:30pm

No experience needed, we'd just love some extra hands to help us out!

If you have your police clearance please email Mrs. Melindy by Monday, April 9th.

admelindy@cbe.ab.ca

Thanks!

Literacy Week

From Monday, March 19th to Thursday, March 22nd, Lake Bonavista School will be celebrating literacy!

Throughout the week, students from the grade 6 Students In Action Club will be coordinating the Book Drive and Exchange to promote love of reading. They will also be treating us to daily read aloud of their favourite books

In addition, there are some school-wide activities happening:

Monday - Community Member Read-Aloud
Tuesday - Author Visit
Wednesday - Teacher Swap
Thursday - Family Literacy Morning, Pyjama Day and Book Exchange

On Thursday, March 22nd, we invite you to join us from 10:30am - 11:30am for a Family Literacy Morning! Snuggle up with your child and a book in various locations around the school. You can also take this time to visit the Book Exchange in the gymnasium, and help your child decide how to spend their book tickets.

Because of the numbers of people we expect, please find alternate care for siblings that do not attend Lake Bonavista School.

A reminder that Thursday, March 22nd is an early-dismissal.

Book Drive and Exchange!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Did you know… over 15 million Canadian adults will have low literacy by 2031? We at LBS know the importance of learning to love reading and all kinds of books! We also want to share that passion with others!

Literacy week is coming and the Students in Action are organizing a BOOK DRIVE/EXCHANGE!

Please donate any books you don’t want anymore to our book drive. For every 2 books donated, your child will receive one book ticket.
YES that means that if you donate 40 books, your child will receive 20 tickets and be able to choose 20 books to take home from all our collected books!

We will be collecting and organizing all the donated books in the gym for selection on Thursday March 22nd from 10:30 to 11:30.

So, what will happen to all the extra books collected and not chosen? We are so glad you asked that! The extra books will be donated to a school or organization in need. Students in Action are very excited to be able to give back to our community as well as offer a book exchange for the students of LBS.

Please help us to make a difference by sending in your gently used children’s books for the book drive. We kindly ask that the books are in good condition and do not have any significant damage. The books donated need to be appropriate for children aged 2 to 14. This would include: fiction, non-fiction, comic books, graphic novels, chapter books and picture books.

Thank your your support!
Kind Regards,
Student’s in Action.
