Monday, December 18th, 2017

Good afternoon families,

Welcome to the last week of school for the year 2017. Students will be busy this week wrapping their work up so that they can start fresh in 2018. Please note that students return to school on Tuesday, January 9th, 2018.

Students are working on their individual culminating tasks related to our shared reading of "The Wild Robot". Some of the work includes creating digital book trailers, building an animal structure, creating an inspirational life lessons handbook, and writing a newspaper article on the author Peter Brown.

To continue our study in Measurement, students are collecting data on a question that can be answered using measurement tools such as stop watches, measuring tape, meter sticks or weight scales. We are learning how to make sure that the data that we collect is accurate. Students were busy today collecting data from their classmates... enjoy the photographs that I was able to capture of true mathematicians at work. The next step will be to organize our data using a bar graph.

A few reminders for this week:

Thursday, December 21st- Last Day of school for students. This is a full day. Wear your Holiday Sweaters!

If your child will not be here for the entire week, please notify Mrs. Morden as soon as possible.

Have a wonderful evening,
Mrs. Morden

Hello!

Thank you to families that were able to make it out to our November conferences! The Book Fair was a huge success, and I am now able to purchase additional books to help support the learning in our classroom.

We are happy to share with you a link to our  Virtual Museum of Art: The Camouflaged Robot. Students have been working hard to create artistic representations in a variety of mediums. Please leave some feedback on the padlet wall as well!
https://padlet.com/hlmorden/1bs1hb07vqs0

We began a new focus as mathematicians today, as we begin to look at polygons. Please ask your child how to describe and classify a polygon. Anytime you can make real life connections to math, the learning becomes more meaningful. Where in your world do you see polygons?

Today was the first day of our Reverse Lunch. Our school will be trying a new schedule over the lunch hour that will allow students to play and be active first, and then eat their lunch. This is called reverse lunch.
Reverse lunch is beneficial for students when they play first and then eat lunch. When students play outside before lunch, schools notice that students:
  • behave better on the playground, in the lunchroom and in the classroom.
  • take in more nutrients by wasting less and eating more of their lunch.
  • focus on eating rather than rushing through lunch to get to outside.
  • leave less litter on school grounds.
  • return to the classroom calmer and ready to work after lunch.
Starting on November 20th  the new schedule is:
                11:38 am         Outdoor recess
12:05 pm         Bell to enter, go to classrooms and eat lunch
                12:28 pm         Classes resume
On cold days, the amount of time spent outside will be adjusted based on the temperature. For students who go home for lunch, their schedule will be the same. When they return to school they will come inside to be supervised.
Eating breakfast is an important way to be ready for the day. Schools that have reverse lunch find that students are often more hungry and thirsty while at school. Please send a water bottle and a healthy snack to school; teachers provide opportunities for children to eat their snacks during the morning.
Change of schedules and routines can be difficult. We will be checking in with students to see what they think of the reverse lunch. Please let us know your thoughts.

Take care,
Mrs. Morden

Good evening families,

It was a busy week in Room 5 with students' last two swimming lessons, our Heritage Park field trip today, and all the work being completed in the classroom.

Students brought home their swim report cards today.

At Heritage Park, our class participated in a multisensory program entitled “Simple Machines and Assembly Line”and “One Room School House”. We began our day by exploring how assembly lines revolutionized car manufacturing and the simple machines that operate within the vehicle industry. We then spent the afternoon living as students in the early 1900s in the One Room School House. We learned what daily and school life was like for kids in the past. Please ask your child for more details!

We have been continuing our learning from the Newcomers MuseoKit from the Glenbow Museum. Students have been looking closely as archeologists to tell the story of several artifacts as they determine the function of the artifacts, how the artifacts were made, how the artifacts might have been used, and what the artifacts tell us about the people who used them. The Grade 3 /4 students and teachers would like to thank School Council for generously providing funds (raised from previous School Council Fundraising Campaigns) to be able to rent the Newcomers Glenbow Museum Museokit.

In connection to our inquiry "Building Community", Grade 4 students have also been looking at historical Immigration Posters, which were used to advertise life in Canada and promote immigration and settlement.

A few students have brought their headphones to school and are using them to listen to digital books, oral media or text to speech when on the computer. If your child has a pair of headphones at home that isn't being used could you kindly remind them to bring them into class.

Take care,
Mrs. Morden

Good evening families,

As part of the Global Read Aloud, students have been looking closely at clues from other classes from around the world that are also reading "The Wild Robot" in order to Guess Where they are From. We are using our understanding of geography as well as the symbols, landscapes, structures, celebrations and more that make areas around our world unique. Please visit https://padlet.com/colleen_malley/wt8p0rdq26l8 to view the clues that Ms. Bouchard & Mrs. Morden's class created together about Calgary as well as other clues posted by Global Read Aloud participants!

On the afternoon of Monday, October 30th, we are getting together with our buddy class for a Buddy Spooktacular! Students will work together with their buddies to explore a variety of themed stations. I am looking for 1-2 volunteers to join us from 12:30-2:43 to help run stations. Stations will include Mystery Touch & Feel, Spooky Smells, What’s that sound? and Slippery Slime.

This afternoon we had a conversation as a class about Halloween at LBS. Our next swimming lesson is the morning of Tuesday, October 31st and all LBS students will be changing into their costumes after lunch hour.
We ask that costumes demonstrate the fun part of dressing up; costumes should be positive in nature. Costumes that promote violence are not appropriate for school. Fake blood, weapons and so on may not be sent as a part of your child’s costume. Costumes need to be easy to pull over clothes and simple to put on after lunch.
If this attention to Halloween is contrary to your family values, please contact the teacher so alternative learning activities for your child can be provided.

If you would like to provide a snack for Room 5 on Halloween we would love to have a balance of healthy snacks, preference to fruit and veggies.

Have an enjoyable evening,
Mrs. Morden

Good afternoon parents,

This afternoon we worked with our buddies outside and explored what is magnetic and non magnetic!

We will be going to Heritage Park on November 10th, and will be riding the bus with our little buddies. Field trip forms will come home in the next few days!

This week we have been learning about historical people including John Ware, James Macleod, Patrick Burns, Thomas Edworthy, Louise Riley, Sam Livingston, A.E. Cross. We are learning how they helped build Calgary, because Calgary wouldn't be the way it is if it wasn't for them. We have learned how to write biographies about these important people.

As mathematicians, we have been using our addition and subtractions skills to solve unfinished number patterns (both increasing and decreasing). We have been using the Montessori Golden Beads as well as the Stamp Game as materials to help us with our calculations.

As part of our Global Read Aloud, we have started working on creating clues for other students from all over the world to "Guess Where We are From". We will share our clues, and also learn more about different communities around the world by reading other clues!

Please note that Parent Council has graciously paid for the $20.00 cost of our Reader Rock Garden Field Trip that took place on September 19th, 2017. We thank Parent Council for their generosity in using fundraising dollars to help make these enriching experiences possible for our students.

Good bye parents!

Hi parents!

To celebrate the season of Fall and our Thanksgiving Day celebrations we have been working on an "inchie" art piece. For one of our inchies, we went outside to collect leaves, painted the veins on the leaf, and then stamped the leaf!

We have been busy listening to our teachers read the Wild Robot book, we even listened to the audio book this week! So far, the Wild Robot has taught us how animals adapt to their environment and brought up the debate/argument: Does a robot who is manmade/unnatural belong in the wild/ in nature?

Please remember that swimming forms are due now. Mrs. Morden is still looking for volunteers for swimming, especially male volunteers. Please send a note or email if you can come any of the days!!!!

This is the last week for the Ad-Mazing Savings Coupon Books. Please try to sell at least one book by Friday!

Don't forget it is Mrs. Morden's birthday tomorrow! She likes smiley and hard working students!!!!

Good bye parents!

Casino Fundraiser

"Don't miss out on the opportunity to help earn ~$70,000+ for our Lake Bonavista School Improvement Society (LBIS) to use for the benefit of the whole school!  We need your help to fill the remaining positions for our Casino Fundraiser on October 26th andOctober 27th at Deerfoot Casino.

Each volunteer position adds approximately $1,800+ to the total amount earned.  There are pretty great benefits too:
  • spending time visiting with other parents from the school,
  • enjoying a free meal at the Mohave Grill, and
  • having your babysitter reimbursed by us!
Volunteers can be anyone over the age of 18, with no criminal record, - so invite your friends and family to help out!

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2017

Hi Families,

This morning we joined Ms. Bouchard's students as we began reading the first few chapters of "The Wild Robot" written by Peter Brown as part of the Global Read Aloud. The Global Read Aloud was created in 2010 with a simple goal in mind; one book to connect the world. This is meant to make the world a little smaller, to open our eyes to the rest of the world and look at all of our shared experiences.  How phenomenal for a child to know that the same book they are reading is being read in classrooms across the globe. As a class, we watched a kick-off video which helped capture the key features of the Global Read Aloud...

ONE BOOK

OVER 1 MILLION STUDENTS
IN 60 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES
ALL READING THE SAME BOOK AT THE SAME TIME.
CONNECTING WITH EACH OTHER
SHARING QUESTIONS
SHARING IDEAS
SHARING OPINIONS
ONE BOOK CONNECTING THE WORLD
GET READY TO BE A PART OF SOMETHING GLOBAL!

As students listened to the story, they focused on the visual images that were being created in their minds and sketched these in their sketchbooks. This provided to be a useful listening tool which we will continue to use as a way to make meaning of the our shared listening experiences.

Part of our discussion about the Global Read Aloud was wondering if some of our own families living in other parts of the world could also be reading the same book. If your child has family in another county that is of similar age perhaps you could reach out and encourage them to ask their teacher to join reading The Wild Robot and join us in the Global Read Aloud. If so please let me know so that we can connect and communicate our thoughts and predictions about the book. (https://theglobalreadaloud.com/)
We look forward to continuing the book tomorrow.

Yesterday was International Day of Peace, also known as Gandhi Day, a national holiday in India where people celebrate peace. To better understand how this day came to be we viewed a short video biography and engaged in a discussion of Gandhi and his contributions that led to celebrating peace. Exploring culture and community allows students to examine shared values and their own sense of belonging, beliefs, traditions and languages.

Have a nice evening,
Mrs. Morden

Hello parents!

Today we participated in Orange Shirt Day. We attended an assembly, where we spoke about making every child feel like they matter.

In the past few weeks, we have been learning more and more about Reader Rock Garden and who William Roland Reader is. We talked about how William helped people in his community using his garden and plants that he grew. We also looked at the people that we spoke about in Union Cemetery, and learned more about how they contributed to growing Calgary's community. We used pictures that were taken or found to help us answer some questions around building Calgary's community.

We have been working on our goal setting... we thought hard about setting a learning goal, work period goal, and a social or personal goal. We can't wait to share these with you at conferences!

See you at conferences!
