This morning we joined Ms. Bouchard's students as we began reading the first few chapters of "The Wild Robot" written by Peter Brown as part of the Global Read Aloud. The Global Read Aloud was created in 2010 with a simple goal in mind; one book to connect the world. This is meant to make the world a little smaller, to open our eyes to the rest of the world and look at all of our shared experiences. How phenomenal for a child to know that the same book they are reading is being read in classrooms across the globe. As a class, we watched a kick-off video which helped capture the key features of the Global Read Aloud...
ONE BOOK
OVER 1 MILLION STUDENTS
IN 60 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES
ALL READING THE SAME BOOK AT THE SAME TIME.
CONNECTING WITH EACH OTHER
SHARING QUESTIONS
SHARING IDEAS
SHARING OPINIONS
ONE BOOK CONNECTING THE WORLD
GET READY TO BE A PART OF SOMETHING GLOBAL!
As students listened to the story, they focused on the visual images that were being created in their minds and sketched these in their sketchbooks. This provided to be a useful listening tool which we will continue to use as a way to make meaning of the our shared listening experiences.
Part of our discussion about the Global Read Aloud was wondering if some of our own families living in other parts of the world could also be reading the same book. If your child has family in another county that is of similar age perhaps you could reach out and encourage them to ask their teacher to join reading The Wild Robot and join us in the Global Read Aloud. If so please let me know so that we can connect and communicate our thoughts and predictions about the book. (https://theglobalreadaloud.com/)
We look forward to continuing the book tomorrow.
Yesterday was International Day of Peace, also known as Gandhi Day, a national holiday in India where people celebrate peace. To better understand how this day came to be we viewed a short video biography and engaged in a discussion of Gandhi and his contributions that led to celebrating peace. Exploring culture and community allows students to examine shared values and their own sense of belonging, beliefs, traditions and languages.
Have a nice evening,
Mrs. Morden
